Top Tips -- How to Choose an Affordable Tax Resolution Firm -- How Not to Become a Victim and Resolve your IRS Problem

TOP TIPS
in
Choosing
a
Income Tax Resolution Firm

The 2 main concerns that individuals who have an IRS debt have are these:

  1. Can I stop the IRS from taking my paycheck, wages, Social Security benefit and resolve my IRS nightmare?
  2. How do I know that I made the right decision in hiring a Tax Resolution Firm?

An honest consultation with a tax resolution expert will provide you with a detailed "road map" as to how you can achieve IRS tax relief. During the consultation the tax resolution analyst should be asking detailed questions regarding your particular problem. The tax resolution analyst should be asking detailed questions regarding your current income and assets, as well as what the IRS is presently doing to collect what they perceive to be the correct tax debt. The tax resolution specialist should counsel you on what the correct steps that need to be taken in order to resolve your particular problem.

The tax resolution analyst should be asking you about your current expenses. The tax resolution specialist should find out from you what the circumstances were that led to your IRS problem.

As you can tell, finding out if someone can get tax relief from the IRS is detailed and extensive. A honest consultation requires the tax professional to be knowledgeable, understanding and willing to take the time to learn what their prospective clients problems are.

DO NOT LET YOUR ANXIETY AND FEAR OF THE IRS RUSH YOU INTO MAKING

A

BAD DECISION

RED FLAGS

A GIANT RED FLAG should go up if during your consultation, the tax resolution representative tries to "close you" and asks, insists or demands that you get credit card/ debit card out and provide them with a payment immediately. If this happens, hang on to your wallet and run the other way. Hanging up immediately will have the same effect.

A reputable firm that has your best interests at heart will send you their documents for your review before any transaction takes place. A reputable tax resolution firm will let you take the time to do an Internet search to see if they have had any complaints.

GIANT RED FLAG #2 would be if the tax resolution specialist is asking for, insisting on or demanding the entire balance of the services fee be paid all at once (prior to any work). If this occurs, once again, hang on to your wallet and get off the phone. If this occurs, then the person you are speaking to is a salesman and is only interested in their commission.

GIANT RED FLAG #3 would be if the tax resolution representative starts "negotiating" with you as to the retainer amount. If a second person comes on the phone with you in an attempt to "close" you, once again,  hang on to your wallet and make a "bee-line" for an exit.

GIANT RED FLAG #4 would be if the tax resolution specialist quotes you some ridiculous amount to handle your IRS problem. If you get quoted an amount that is over $5000.00 (only if you owe over $500,000.00), hang on to your wallet and "run for the hills." If you are qualified and eligible for an IRS settlement there will be a certain amount of labor hours that will need to be applied to you as a client. The variable is whether you have a Revenue Officer assigned to your case or not. If you do, there will be additional work hours needed to resolve your case. If you owe less than $100,000.00 you most likely do not have a Revenue Officer. You could if you have many years of unfiled tax returns but this can be resolved by getting you to be Compliant.

If you owe more than $100,000.00 then you will be assigned to the BIG BALANCE department at the IRS Office in Buffalo. This would mean that more man hours will be required and hence a slightly higher fee. But at no time should your fee be higher than $5000.00 even if you owe A MILLION dollars.

BEWARE OF "PUPPY MILLS"

There are many reputable tax resolution firms but you need to be concerned with firms that do a lot of television ads as well as radio ads.

WHY?

Let's logically think this through. If you see an advertisement on television or hear a radio advertisement, the cost of that advertisement comes from 1 source. That source is you. You must figure on at least $1000.00 of your fee is allocated toward paying for that advertisement.

With the need to pay for those advertisements, the tax resolution firm needs to "close" as many respondents as possible. That means that the tax resolution firm may accept you as a client when they know that there is no way that they can reduce your tax debt, lower your installment payment, reduce or eliminate your penalties and interest or get you into Currently not Collectible status.

Many of these tax resolution firms may have started with the best of intentions but later turn into sales groups interested only in how many clients they can get and lose their desire to do "great work."

The Roni Lynn Deutch Story -- The Tax Lady and Her Demise

Although all the details have not come out, there have been well chronicled news reports regarding the "Tax Lady" Roni Deutch and the problems that her firm has encountered.

Here are 2 links to news stories regarding "tax resolution mills" (worse than puppy mills):

BEWARE OF LARGE TAX RESOLUTION FIRMS

You do not want to be 1 of many. You do not want to get lost in the shuffle. You want and deserve to have individual attention and that can only be accomplished at a smaller firm devoted to their clients.

TAX RESOLUTION FEES

Flat Fee Tax Service clearly posts our fees on the front page of our website for all to view. Our prospective clients as well as our competitors are free to view our fees. No one else does this so boldly. Flat Fee Tax Service is unique and unafraid to let the world know what we charge for our services. Flat Fee Tax Service will take a small retainer and put the balance into a monthly payment plan that most people can achieve.

Although we, at Flat Fee Tax Service, can have your Wage Levy stopped and released in a matter of hours, that is only the 1st step in resolving your IRS problem. With that in mind, we accept low monthly payments as our way of making tax resolution available to most everyone.

Sometimes, we have found ourselves providing the work necessary to stop a Wage Levy prior to receiving our retainer. We know that losing your paycheck to an IRS Garnishment may result in you not having our reasonable retainer until you get a full paycheck. Flat Fee Tax Service lives in the real world. Therefor we have accepted clients prior to receiving our retainer.

DO YOU QUALIFY FOR AN AN IRS SETTLEMENT

If you qualify for an IRS Settlement through the IRS Offer in Compromise (OIC) program, you can "get your life back", you can save thousands of dollars in taxes, penalties and interest. Taxpayers can have IRS Tax Debt on all types of taxes, including most payroll taxes, penalties, and interest. It is the closest thing to amnesty that the federal government offers in connection with back tax debt.

Taxpayers should bear in mind however, that the IRS Offer in Compromise program or IRS Penalty Abatement program is a privilege, not a right such as bankruptcy. That being said, it is a very subjective process. The IRS has the final word. The IRS Offer in Compromise (OIC) process is a very complicated drawn out process that can take upwards of nine months to a year and even longer. There are IRS guidelines, rules and protocols established by operation of law, under IRC Section 7122. However, most IRS Offer Examiners (former Revenue Officers) use the Internal Revenue Manual (IRM) as their guide.

THE IRS HAS EASED THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR

AN

OFFER in COMPROMISE

“I’ve made a whole set of changes to the Offer in Compromise (OIC) program since I’ve been here to try to increase the participation rate, increase the acceptance rate, because it’s good for the tax system,” Doug Shulman, the IRS Commissioner said.

“These changes to the Offer in Compromise program will help give taxpayers a fresh start,” said Doug Shulman, the IRS commissioner, in a conference call with reporters. These changes “are especially appropriate as the American people and small businesses are climbing out of the worst recession in a generation.”

There are a variety of things, all aimed at increasing acceptance rates for an Offer in Compromise, making it a user-friendly thing to apply for,” Shulman said.
